Time To Face The Day

The Time & Space Machine aka Richard Norris is set to put out a second single from his Taste The Lazer album. The album is definitely SIART approved - a delightful blend of psychedelic rock, spacy synths and the summery likes of Good Morning. If you've enjoyed Norris' remix work as half of Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve it is likely that you will enjoy The Time & Space Machine. He takes that remix ethos and applies it to an album full of originals and it is very entertaining. The single is out July 23rd and comes with three lovely remixes by Leftside Wobble, Saint Etienne and Coyote. The track also has a cool Pete Fowler and Oscar Granse animated video worth checking out.

Scream Therapy

Therapist is a three piece indie band with members Suz residing in Phoenix, AZ, and Ant and Marco, both residing in California. They are shouty post-punk dance rock practitioners, and I love that shit. Suz sings with the right amount of snark and snarl and the music is tight and angular. French producer and artist in his own right Joakim is putting out a new album in September called Nothing Gold. I'm a big fan. My first exposure to him was as the producer of Panico, and over the years I have grooved to his remixes for the likes of Goldfrapp, Late of the Pier, Cut Copy and Friendly Fires, as well as his stellar production of Poni Hoax. The first single from the new album, his 4th, is this delightful track, Forever Young, which has been remixed by Discodeine. Joakim describes the song as the "soundtrack to a late beach sunset on an Indian Summer's night, a setting where time is meaningless, yet quickly fades away." All know is that I like the synthy propulsiveness of it and the nice '80s melancholy feel.

Deeeluuxe & Delightful...

I've been spending some quality time with Bryan Ferry's new solo album Olympia. The first few listens left me feeling a bit meh. I kept listening. Now I can say with some certainty that I like it - I like it a lot. Is it a paradigm shift in sound or style? Absolutely not. It sounds just like a Bryan Ferry or Roxy Music record should. The cast of players on it is mindbogglingly huge and ranges from old time studio pros to the hipsters of today. For starters you've got his Roxy band mates Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay and drummer Andy Newmark. Then you add Nile Rodgers & Marcus Miller. Toss in some David Gilmour, Jonny Greenwood and Flea. Add a pinch of Mani, Dave Stewart, Groove Armada & Scanner, then sprinkle with Jake Shears and Babydaddy. And of course, produced by Rhett Davies. Yowsah. And I left some people off. Suffice it to say that the record is expertly played and produced. The songs take you from the smoky back room of a club - You Can Dance showing an older Ferry getting tired of the grind - to the dance floor, with the Groove Armada collabo Shameless bringing gritty beats and bass. There are covers as per usual. Tim Buckley's Song To The Siren is nice but not as spine tingly as This Mortal Coil's. This album is probably not likely to win a lot of new fans, but old fans should be pretty happy with the results! Enjoy a few remixes...

Holestar - NyLon Woman (Phileastend Mix)She is London's favorite tranny with a fanny. She is Holestar, the gender-bending Drag Goddess - a woman dressing up as a man, dressing as a gorgeous woman - a Victor/Victoria for the oughties. A queer woman and a a former soldier in the British Army, Holestar is also a Central St Martins Fine Art Masters graduate, club promoter, DJ and cabaret artist. And her last name really is Hole. The best thing about it all for me is that she pegged my fellow blogger (Worrapolava) and web friend PhilEastend to help her birth her new single "NyLon Woman" (out worldwide on iTunes, Amazon and Napster on April 12th). He provides Holestar with a delightful electro pop backing track and a now a remix to boot. He writes on his blog "And do you know what's brilliant about all of this? We're doing it all with no money, no third party backing and no risk. All we have are ideas and the willing to make something out of nothing." Super fun idea, super fun execution - the new wave of internet based grassroots music promotion. Holestar loves you, love her back...

Black And Blue Animal

Anyone I work with will tell you how much I love Miike Snow. Their self titled debut album has been in steady rotation in the 5 disc player for some 5 or 6 months now. I am amazed at how much I dig the record. It has sharp hooks and grownup pop smarts - definitely not a teenybopper record. On a related side note tho' - my kids (5 & 9) love it. The label sent a couple of remixes and a video to share. The Mark Ronson remix in particular is a real gem, stripping the tune down and turning it into a old school reggae-fied lovers rock jam.

I am a big fan of Empire of the Sun. The music is great and the imagery is out of control, over the top bad '80s sci-fi. Whats not to love? Yesterday during the eclipse in Asia they premiered a new perfromance clip. It is very entertaining.
