Hot Promo Action

Fresh from my inbox to your music playing devices, here are a few songs I am happy to share...

YACHT - Psychic City
See Mystery Lights
(DFA - July 28)

Esser - Headlock
(Chocolate Industries - August 11)

Curumin - Sambito (Totaru Shock)
Japan Pop Show
(out now)

One of my favorite current soul singers is Van Hunt. His self-titled debut was a stunner. The follow up On the Jungle Floor was good. His third album Popular never got a release due to record company b.s. Now he is joining the musical masses of the interwebs and selling Use In Case of Emergency, a collection of unreleased material and re-mixes on his website. Somebody give this man a deal!

Drone of The Day - Sinkane

Sinkane - Apache Beat
This delightful tune landed in my inbox today. Sinkane is drummer Ahmed Gallab. He has played with Caribou, of Montreal and Born Ruffians. In his solo guise he creates psychedelic music "filled with African blues guitar, kraut rock rhythms, free jazz horns, and a Spacemen 3-esque ambience, a journey full of drones, repetition, and bombastic percussion." I had no idea. I must say that Apache Beat is a glorious bit of Krautrock grooviness with a blistering feedback fest at the end. His new album Sinkane is out July 11th on Emergency Umbrella Records. I look forward to hearing the rest of it!

New Music Tuesday

The Horrors - New Ice Age
I am obsessed with British rock music. Always have been. The latest band of British persuasion that I'm obsessed with is The Horrors. They have been around for a few years now - their debut Strange House came out in 2007 and was pretty much maligned by the press. It never made it onto my radar/CD player. Their new album Primary Colours came out today. It was produced by Portishead main man Geoff Barrow and Craig Silvey. Two of the tracks were produced by video auteur Chris Cunningham. A mate of mine recommended the album in passing a few weeks ago so I decided to investigate. I am hooked. It is a heady combination of many things I like; some Psychedelic Furs, a dash of My Bloody Valentine, equal parts Jesus & Mary Chain and Phil Spector, a smidge of PIL, sprinkled lightly with some Joy Division and Interpol, then slathered in Geoff's prog/motorik production. It has raging guitars, pounding drums and plenty of icy synth action. It has anthems, catchy riffs and some quiet art moments too. It covers all of the bases for me. God bless you British rock people...
