Radiohead Are My Homies

Weird Fishez

"After a cease & desist put the breaks on Amplive's Radiohead In Rainbows remix project, the online music community reasonably wondered if the tracks would ever see the light of day. Well, here they are.

While the Oakland producer/DJ acknowledges that he probably should have contacted Radiohead (who were not involved in the project) to seek approval prior to making his interpretations publically available, an agreement has been reached between all involved parties and Amplive has been granted permission to release 'Rainydayz Remixes' for free to the general public. Effective immediately, the eight-track record is available HERE.

Rainydayz Remixes is composed exclusively of source material pulled from In Rainbows, re-envisioned by Amplive and complimented by vocal work from Too $hort, MC Zumbi of Zion I, Chali2na of Jurassic 5, Codany Holiday, and Del The Funky Homosapien.
"

This is such an interesting idea/project. I love the thought of mixing two such disparate forms of music, and this does just that to sometimes brilliant effect (see Weird Fishez). I love that the band sanctioned its release after being alerted to its existence. It speaks to the quality of what is on offer here, and to the band's approach to using the web to promote its music. I love the internets.

A Handful Of Covers - New Wave

"Nouvelle Vague Presents New Wave : When Post-Punk Met Pop Culture"

From the known to the relatively unknown, this two disc set of new wave cover songs has something for everybody. I finally found a copy a couple of weeks ago and have been in heaven ever since. The selections offered today are a few of my personal faves; Snakefinger (long time friend and collaborator of The Residents) brings glorious guitar to Kraftwerk. Steve Strange's android vocals and Midge Ure's production show Visage's future as New Romantic pioneers. The Flying Lizards are, well, The Flying Lizards - quirky and irreverent, and OMD bring the OMD to a Lou Reed classic. Lots of fun!

Snakefinger - The Model
(Kraftwerk)
Visage - In The Year 2525
(Zager & Evans)
The Flying Lizards - Move On Up
(Curtis Mayfield)
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Waiting For The Man
(The Velvet Underground)

The Return Of Funky Friday

Goldfrapp - A&E (Hercules And Love Affair Remix) - bumping disco remix from this DFA Records crew with their own album forthcoming...

The Bird And The Bee - Last Day Of Our Love - the spirit of Gainsbourg lives on, and if it reminds you a bit of Lily Allen it is because 1/2 of the band is Greg Kurstin who co-wrote and produced much of Lily's LP.

Kelpe - Yippee Space Ghost (Sidversion) - fantastic instrumental that may remind you a bit of Boards of Canada...

Quando Quango - Love Tempo (Remix) - old school Factory Records electro funk...

Tyrone Brunson - The Smurf - this was a fave of mine back in the early '80s when I hung out with the jazz funk fans in college. Big ups to Krafty Kuts for using this track on their Back To Mine and reminding me of it's greatness.

Steely Dan - I Got The News - the Dan, from Aja, perpetrating perverse slick disco. Killer groove.

MGMT - Electric Feel - these guys' debut Oracular Spectacular is on everyday rotation in my world, and can only be described as BIG. This is some fine indie rock/disco and not really an indication of what the rest of the album sounds like.

Neon Neon - Raquel - from the forthcoming LP Stainless Style, this is indie beatmaker Boom Bip + Super Furry frontman Gruff Rhys + a host of guests + a great concept (telling the story of '80s car maker John DeLorean's rise and fall) = WOW.

Beck - Gold Chains - bonus, previously unreleased track from the deluxe edition of Odelay that just came out...

Onra - The Anthem
Onra - Chop Your Hands
Onra - Relax In Mui Ne
Play these 3 in a row, as they are. Onra is a French-Vietnamese DJ who was able to do some crate digging on a trip to Vietnam. When he returned to France he used his scores to create the LP Chinoiseries, a lovely Jay Dee/Madlib-esque take on Asian music.

On A Break
